NEWS & RESULTS – 2019 – Week 2 (29/4/19 to 5/5/19)

What a difference a week makes?? From only 1 win out of 5 at week 1, to only 1 defeat out of 5 at week 2.

The Monday team set the pace this week with a 6-1 victory against Bacton at home. After a bad start for David E, Mo & Mel and 12 shots down at half way, they did claw their way back a little to lose by 8 shots. A very close game for David M, Mads & Colin who kept their noses in front for 95% of their game to win by 3 shots. Mike, Andie & David L, Galloped away to a 16-2 lead by the 11th end, but did allow their opponents to win the second half with 7 shots – still a good result! Alan, Phil & Laurie, after dropping a 3 at the first end, came back strong and dropped only 3 more shot up to the 14th end at 21-6. Bacton then doubled their score over the final 7 ends. A good result all round – well done!

The Afternoon A team did well to go to Needham Market and pick up 5 points. Graham, Geoff & Colin had a tight game and were 3 up at the 11th, but then dropped a 2 and a 4 and failed to recover to lose by 2 shots. Other than a few good ends from Alan & Mel, Jan controlled the other game to perfection with an outstanding performance. It was a treat to watch by both sides, even down to the final end. It was 13-8 to Thornham going into that final end with Needham wanting 3 shots to draw the match. Thornham were holding shots with the skips having a wood each to play. The Needham skip bowled his final wood and took the cot back to 3 of their woods – suddenly 4 down and match to Needham!! But hang on, Jan’s got a wood to bowl and that came down on a full length, through a crowd of woods to trickle in for shot wood and match to Thornham – what an absolute cracker!!!

And there was more dramatics with the B team at home against Gipping Valley. Paul, Nije & Glyn led the charge and stormed into a 15-1 lead after 10 ends. But looking across to the other rink, it was obvious that Barry, Chris & Ray were struggling at 3-12 down – but up on the match by 5 shots! It then got worse, as one rink was gaining shots; the other rink was losing shots at a higher rate, resulting in a dramatic draw with similar margins – 27-6 and 6-27. A hard fought 3½ point!

Once again, the Wednesday Triples team were stars of the week with another clean sheet. This time, at home against Haughley. The 3 David’s had the closest game and nearly lost it when they dropped a 3 on the final end. David R, Ann & Glyn were slow off the mark, but soon took command and won comfortably. Bob, Moira & Colin flew away from the start and lost only 5 ends in their 23-10 victory. Trish, Jan & Phil only lost 6 ends in their game and although there was only 1 shot in it at the 13th, they made sure of their win over the final ends. I understand that Jan was centre of attention in this game also – keep it up Jan!!

The Upper Waveney Triples team are still looking for inspiration and suffered another painful defeat at home against Gissing. Mo, Nije & Mel got away well and lost only 1 of the first 7 ends to be 8-1 up at the 7th. They then dropped a 4, 1 and another 4 that change the game to Gissing’s favour. However, they did hold their nerve and won the only point for Thornham. David L, Ray & Phil had a bad start to be 0-10 down after 4 ends – the amount they lost their game by! Both rinks of Joy, Geoff & Kip and Ann, Mel & Laurie had dreadful games. In fact, they were so bad; I won’t even go into any details.

And to make the evening even more disastrous, Alan, Glyn & Colin were playing a County 2Wood Triples game against a Stanton team with a result of a similar description – again, I won’t go into details!!!
