NEWS & RESULTS – 2019 – Week 12 (8/7/19 to 14/7/19)

I start this report with a fixture that was played during the previous week – the Marie Curie! Our stay in this competition was short lived, but a gallant effort by all our ladies, 7 in all, against a strong Combs team. Mo, Ann & David had a wicked first half and found themselves 4- 21 down at the 11th end. But they fought back well and managed to get within 4 shots with 1 end to go, then dropped a 3 – very unlucky!! Joy, Mads & Mel had a hard game against my old workmate – Graham Sheldrake! They did well over the first 6 ends to be 5-3 up, but the Combs trio took over and won by 14 shots. Brenda, Jan & Laurie had a close game but were always those odd shots behind. Trish, Phil & Colin had a poor start and trailed all the way to the 19th when they drew level at 14-14, but the excitement was too much and they dropped 5 shots over the final 2 ends.

It was another bad day for the Monday 2Wood team at home against Bramford. Surprisingly, it was David M, Mads & Colin who were hardest hit and it all happened after they were15-15 at the 15th end. They lost all 6 of the remaining ends to the tune of 12 shots – ouch!! Brenda, Phil & Laurie kept in touch up to half way and then didn’t score for 5 ends – enough to lose their rink by 5 shots! Mike, Andie & David L were always a few shots behind from start to finish. Alan, Mo & Kipp with not the best of starts and were 6-14 down by the 9th. Then a sudden burst and it was 14-14 and 5 ends later it was 14-18 – time for a change of skip! So they sent the old boy down and immediately dropped another 3 shots. 2 ends to go and on the changeover we are holding 4 – but short!! We could do with more than 4, so I placed a wood with such care and picked up the cot and took it nearer to our opponents woods – 1 shot only!!! The rest is history and I have been banned?? (I do keep telling them we must have back woods).

And so on to the Afternoon A. team where we have better news. Yes, a 5-2 win at home against the Rookery. Alan, Mel & Jan had a good close game, but lost out over the final 3 ends by 3 shots. It started to look a little gloomy for Graham, Moira & Colin after being stuck on 5 for 6 ends, then, on the half way, 9th end, they pulled back a 5 to go 1 in front. They widened the gap to 9 shots and then dropped a 6 – game on! No fears as they went further ahead to win their game and the match.

Not so good for the B. team playing away at Mendlesham. Finishing with no points in the bag! Nije, Ray & David came close, losing by just 1 shot after trail for the whole game. Paul, Barry & Mads had their moment of glory when they took the first end, but then lost sight of the game, just making the odd challenge on the way.

It was another great win for the Wednesday Triples team, bringing home 6 ½ points from top of the league Needham Market. The rinks of Bob, Moira & Colin – Brenda, Jan & Phil – David R, Glyn & Andie, all read much the same – powering their way to substantial leads by Half way! Trish, Mo & David M also had a good lead by half way, but allowed their opponents to fight back and even take the lead on the 17th, but ½ point was saved when the Thornham set gathered 2 shots on the final end – exceedingly well done team!

It was also exceedingly well done for the Upper Waveney tem at home against Stradbroke & District. Mel H, Ann & David were the only set to lose – all down to a bad start and 2×6’s on the way!! 3-19 down after 7 ends didn’t deter them as they went on to win 8 of the remaining 11 ends to bow out respectably! A close game for Mike, Mo & Mel N. and just missed out on another ½ point when the dropped a 2 on the final end! It was almost the same story for Joy, Geoff & Kipp, who were 5 shots up with 2 ends to go, then dropped 4 shots, but held on for that important point. The match winning rink was Brenda, Ivan & Laurie, (good to see you back Ivan). 4-9 behind at the 6th, then won 10 of the remaining 12 ends to finish victoriously – winning their rink and snatching the match!
