NEWS & RESULTS – 2019 – Week 13 (15/7/19 to 21/7/19)
I’ve barely started and I’m almost in tears already. It’s not the Monday team that’s getting me all upset, in fact, they did quite well this week – it’s the thought of having to say something about the Tuesday A. team??? Hopefully, I’ll deal with that when I come to it!
Although the 2Wood team came away from Thorndon with only 3 points, it was all so close, with 2 rinks drawing their games and losing the match over the final 3 or 4 ends. It was a bad start for Mo, Mads & Colin and found themselves 5-14 down at the 13th. A slow recovery brought them to within 2 shots at the end. It was a good battle throughout the game for Ivan, Andie & David, just losing out by 1 shot. The 2 rinks of Geoff, Mike & Kipp and Brenda, Phil & Laurie, both in front at the 19th, could only manage a draw each.
Now the Afternoon A. team – oh my word!! How on earth can you play so badly on your own green? Or perhaps it was all down to being “out classed”? Excuse me; I can’t see what I’m typing as the tears are all over my glasses!!! Mel, Geoff & Alan only won 5 ends – 1 of those was an 8! Bob, Moira & Graham also only won 5 ends, but sadly – no 8! However, their opponents did score 2x6’s against them! That’s enough about that match??!?!!
The Afternoon B team played Haughley C team on their ground and at least came away with 2 points. Barry, Ray & David had a tough old game and were 0-15 down after the first 5 ends. They collected a few odd points, winning just 5 ends (that seems to be a common figure for our teams this week), while their opponents added another 20 points to their score. Paul, Phil & Glyn fares a lot better and got away with a 4, then led all the way home to a 16-10 win.
It does my old head well when I pick up the Wednesday Triples card – they are almost guaranteed to have points in them! And sure enough – 7 of them against Wortham!! All rinks had points on the boards on the first end and then led mainly throughout the game. Trish, Mo & David M. had a steady game and once passed the 4th end just piled on the scores. Brenda, Jan & Phil had a close game and kept their noses in front up to the 15th but they had a scare when they dropped a shot at the 16th to go 1 behind for the first time. No problem – 3 shots on the final 2 ends gave them victory! Reliable Bob, Moira & Colin performed in their usual manner and they too led all the way. It seems that David R, Glyn & Andie have recovered from their ordeal at Haughley 2 weeks ago and have got well back into their usual form by reaping in the points. A little hiccup at ends 3 & 4 where they dropped 8 shots, but they then went into a gallop to win by 10 shots.
After beating Diss 6-1 earlier in the season, it was time for Thornham to go to Diss and it was revenge for Diss in a very painful way. Yes, it was nil points and a 44-99 score line – ouch!!! The best performance was from Brenda, Nije & Laurie after a comparatively close game and lost by 5 shots. Joy, Geoff & Kipp flew away at the start and were 10-4 up at the 7th. It then all went very, very wrong and by the 15th, they had added 1 shot to their opponents 19. Mo, Ann & David weren’t allowed to join in until the 9th end, by which time they were 0-16 down. They then picked up a 4 and a 3 and it all started to look promising – but no such luck!! Just 2 more 1’s and finished 20 shots adrift! As for the 3xM’s, Mike, Mel H & Captain Mel, also winning only 4 ends, finished 22 shots adrift. Never mind – it’s not the winning that counts, it’s the taking part???
It was much better news on Friday when the Upper Waveney team travelled to Medlesham for the Upper Waveney Plate. Brenda, Ann & Kipp were slow starters and played “catch-up” for most of the game and actually went into the lead by 1 shot at the 14th. They then lost the remaining ends to lose by 4 shots. Mo, Geoff & Laurie had an up and down game, getting away to a good start to be 9-4 up after 4 ends. A few ends later, they were 9-14 down. By the 15th, they were 17-15 up and then lost the final 3 ends. Joy, Phil & David led all the way home, but had a bit of a scare over the final 3 ends when their opponents came back with a2,3 and a1 to get within 4 shots. The biggest win was Jan, Mads & Mel teasing their opponents until it was 11-10 at the 13th, and then pulled away to win by a very useful 8 shots.
