NEWS & RESULTS – 2019 – Week 18 (19/8/19 to 25/8/19)
My word – what a busy week! And what a catastrophic set of results to end the season with??? 7 matches – 1 win and 1 draw!! Now there are several reason this could be down to – Maureen & Kipp were away – I played in 3 games (bit of a jinks) – or perhaps the other teams were better than we were???
Bacton 100, Thornham Magna 52 says it all! Geoff, Phil & Mel, 13-11 up at the 16th and lost 14-17. Alan, Andie & David L, 17-16 up at the 19th and lost 17-20. The very strong rink of Brenda, Jan & Laurie managed to get within 1 shot at the 9th, and then lost their way to finish 12-28 – ouch! Then a bigger ouch with David M, Mads & Colin winning the first end, then punished all the way to end up 9-35 down.
Moving on to the Afternoon A. team at home against Bildeston, I pleaded with groundsman Laurie to allow us to play long ways to give us a chance to thrash them. Big mistake, as I was cancelled out to start with – unable to reach!!! Yes, it was Alan, Geoff & Graham, who in fact were 7-4 up at the 11th, then it all went horribly wrong, dropping a 6 on the way to a kicking! Bob, Moira & Colin couldn’t show their normal sparkle and trailed all the way to an 8 shot defeat.
A brief pause in the horror stories as the Afternoon team flew the flag with a draw against Bildeston’s B. team. The stronger of the 2 rinks, Phil, Barry & David, started quite well until the 7th, when they dropped a 2, 5 then a 6 – game over really, although they did win the final 4 ends. It was Ray, Paul & Glyn who actually held the flag and led for most of the way. Sadly, they dropped a 3 on the final end – when they looked like winning the match!
In the evening, the Upper Waveney team played against Scole in the semi-finals of the Plate and were very unlucky to lose by just 2 shots. Brenda, Mel H & Laurie had a bad start by losing the first 5 ends to be 0-7 down at the 6th. They then had a winning streak of 6 ends to go 13-7 in front. It was then their opponents turn to win 4 ends, including a 6 to go 4 in front, but Thornham took the final 3 ends to win by 3 shots. The other winning rink was Ann, Phil & David who kept their noses in front all the way to win by 5 shots. Jan, Mads & Mel N. had a close game, but lost out over the last 4 ends. Joy, Geoff & Mike had a bad start and were 0-8 down after 4 ends and although winning the majority of ends over the remainder of their game to go 13-13 at the 15th, they then dropped a 5 and a 3 – which sealed their fate!!
Crunch time for the Wednesday Triples team, with so many good reports through the season, they now have a positive chance to win the league if they beat Elmswell at Stowupland?? But it didn’t quite work out as hoped for! Bob, Moira & Colin, recovering from the previous days result, did their part with a good win by 6 shots. Brenda, Jan & Phil were going great guns and by the 13th end were leading by 10 shots. Then disaster, losing the final 6 ends to the tune of 13 shots. David R, Glyn & Andie trailed for the whole of their game and lost by 6 shots. Trish, Alan & David M looked to be comfortable up to the 9th end and 12-8 up. Then it all went pear shaped, losing 7 of the remaining 9 ends and go down by 11 shots. It was later discovered that Needham Market won their final game well to win the league by 3 shots – aaaah!!
It was a big win for the Upper Waveney team at Beeches, together with many favourable comments about their green – well worth the trip in fact!!! The only losing rink was the Captain’s rink, Joy, Geoff & Mel N. Behind right from the start and all the way to the finish, picking up only 7 ends on the way. Mike, Nije & Ivan shot away at the start and held their lead all the way home. It was a closer game for Mel H, Ann & Colin, but were 4 shots adrift at the 14th. They held their cool and took the remaining 4 ends with a 3 at the last to snatch a win. The big win of the evening was that of Brenda, Phil & Laurie who cruised through to the finishing line, allowing their opponents just 5 ends.
Friday 23rd August and the final match of the season – the Marie Curie Plate against Old Newton! And by the looks of the team on the score cards – Thornham were going to find it hard work!! And to give credit to Philip, he picked a team of 6 ladies and 6 men – mind you, I think the ladies are better that the men anyway, but keep that under your hat!!! Ann, Phil & Ivan Led for most of the way and looked like winning, but had a difficult final quarter dropping 13 shots over 4 ends to lose by 1 shot. A bad start by Brenda, Jan & Laurie by losing their game over the first 5 – end and not recover! A close game for Joy, Trish C & Colin but lost their way over the final stretch. Geoff, Trish M & Mel were evenly matched over the first half, but again it was that final stretch and being stuck on 13 when they were punished.
As if we hadn’t had enough bowls this week, on Sunday, Thornham Magna staged the Inter League match between the Stowmarket League and the Saxmundham League with the result going to Stowmarket. Once again, a great day, a good crowd, 34 cars to accommodate, goodness knows how many lunches and well done to the bowlers playing 30 ends in all that heat. But most of the credit has got to go to the ladies of our club, led as usual by Mads – they worked their socks off – not that any of them were waring socks in the first place???
