News Extra 2019 – Stowmarket League & Upper Waveney League Finals

NEWS EXTRA – September weekends of Sunday 1st and Saturday & Sunday 7th & 8th

Two extremely busy but successful events, starting with the Stowmarket League Final’s Day on Sunday 1st September.

There was obviously a great deal of pre-planning involve, with Madsie, as usual, in charge of food and accommodation and Laurie, together with Philip, preparing the green and surrounds for what was expected to be – a full house??

Not knowing exactly how many would arrive at one time, I took responsibility for controlling the parking and although we were blessed with overflow facilities, it seemed right to be precise and direct cars into every available space – provided everyone could get out when needed! And it’s a good job we did, with the overflow full and the drive packed, we had 60 cars in at one time – and some of them were big trucks!!

Everyone worked so hard, especially the ladies and of course Andie on the bar – the best it’s done for a long time! But the star performers were Barbara & David dishi

ng out bacon rolls. They were so busy, they even ran out of bacon by mid-day and David had to dash off to Diss for more supplies and by the end of the day – they were all gone also!!

Sadly, we had nobody from the club playing in the finals, but it all went off smoothly, the weather was kind and there were many favourable comments from departing guests, so well done Thornham Magna.

UPPER WAVENEY SEMI-FINAL’S and FINALS (7/9/19 & 8/9/19)

And so onto the following weekend, this time, 2 days of hard graft for those members who were present to assist. The same presentation as for the previous week with plenty of food, drink and an excellent green prepared for the occasion – well done again Laurie & Phil! Weather was fair with one sharp shower towards the end of the day.On the Saturday it was the Semi-Finals, and Thornham had several players taking part.

Jan & Brenda in the Ladies Pairs and lost by just 1 shot.

Jan, Brenda & Laurie in the Mixed Triples, and also lost by just 1 shot.

Colin & Phil in the 4Wood Pairs plus Phil & Laurie in the Brian Leeder 4Wood Pairs. Both won through to the Final’s – well done!

Philip & Colin

Laurie & Philip

It was a perfect day on the Sunday for the Final’s – no wind and plenty of sunshine!

First up for Thornham was Colin & Phil in the 4Wood pairs. It all looked to be plain sailing as Colin & Phil led all the way – nothing could stop them?? However, the excitement was too much for Philip and he went off the boil for the last 2 ends, allowing their opponents to take advantage and steal the game. Very unlucky, but a great game to watch and well done to their opponents!!

As if Philip hadn’t had enough and the thought of the previous game on his mind, he went straight into the other 4Wood game with Laurie – oh well, he is a young lad after all?? He showed no signs of faltering this time and together with Laurie, who was playing at his best, led all the way, close towards the end, but came home triumphant to be Brian Leeder Wood champions 2019 – congratulations!
