GISLINGHAM POST OFFICE:January 2009
Written by Anne Warburton

The Post Office has now announced its "final decision... that Gislingham Post Office will be closed on a permanent basis". It is made quite clear that closure is not subject to re-consultation, but the previous local public consultation is cited as one reason for the decision now to carry out a further such consultation before a final decision on the appropriate Outreach Service to replace this branch.

The new proposal is a Mobile Service  in Gislingham for approximately 10 hours weekly.  It is proposed that the vehicle be positioned in Westview Gardens between 11.30 and 1.30 on Monday to Friday. The standard range of services would be available. Bacton (4 miles away) is the principal alternative suggested  at other times.

This consultation will close on 2 March: to be considered, comments must be received by then. Letters to  be addressed to:
Laura Tarling,
Network deveopment Manager,
Freepost Consultation Team.

Korky  - Consult     |2009-01-28 10:30:37
The word rather defines an era in my mind. We have "consultants" at every level of business, managers "consult" us at work and the government and its representatives "consult" us about social issues. Sadly, one thing remains consistent and that is the loss of the true meaning of the word "Consult", and "Consultant" for that matter, are now vacuous, meanginless terms coined to imbue a sense of involvement or justice.

Sorry for being so pessimistic

I agree with Korky. I was recently asked to take part in a "consultation" regarding re-structuring at work. one option in the consultation was to maintain the status quo. As I thought this was by far the best option I advocated for this only to be told "maintaining the status quo is not an option....."

I understand that the Post Office's intention to park a mobile van on a Gislingham side street has run foul of Suffolk County rules!
Next move awaited. Meanwhile, I have sent in my (strong) protest lest silence be construed as consent.
