NEWS & RESULTS – 2012 – Week 2 (30/4 to 6/5)
Week 2 and another wet week with 2 more games called off due to water logged greens - all leading to a very cramped season later on! However, those games we did manage to play this week resulted in sweet success all round.

PRE-SEASON REPORT APRIL 2012
A lot has happened since my last report and sadly, some of those happenings were not on the agenda for this season. I refer of course to the sudden loss of two of our members Alan Cogdell and Ada Hawes.
Alan joined the Club, together with his wife Moira, in the year 2000 and soon became an active me
mber and good friend of the Club. He matured quickly into a good player and eventual took over the role of Club Captain which included the running of the Monday League and Senior Cup teams. As and when his health permitted he was always ready to roll his sleeves up and carry out odd jobs around the Club premises including a helping hand to Groundsman Laurie when called for. Not only did he serve as a committee member, he also represented the club by be
coming the Stowmarket League President in 2009, then continuing as League Chairman; you left your mark Alan and you will be dearly missed!
Ada joined us in 1976 and played for many years until her health started to falter before the turn of the century. However, she did remain a social member and supported most of our functions during the past few years – another dearly missed friend and member!
We started March by rounding off our “Winter Club Nights” with a Bingo session followed by a Fish/Chic
ken and Chip Supper (including a selection of desserts) - another great night! Thanks again to Mad’s and her helpers (that includes Laurie on the bar of course), not only for this occasion, but throughout the winter months. Oh yes, we must not forget to thank our most esteemed “Master of Ceremonies” (for most of the events) – Mr Brian Haynes. Well done Brian! Just go easy on me in future on Quiz Nights!
Laurie has been like a dog with 2 tails this last couple of weeks; his Automatic Irrigation plant has been installed at last! No more trudging off down to the Green at midnight to turn the water off! It might have broken the bank, buts it’s long overdue and should be an asset in the future.
Once again, the AGM was well attended and went off without too many fracases. The main topic of the evening was the resignation of our Treasurer – Barbara Miller. Barbara has done us proud as Treasurer for 10 difficult years. I say difficult as there have been many big projects over the past few years and the cheques have been flowing fast – so well done Barbara for keeping the books straight and for keeping us afloat! The challenge is now in the hands of Trish Emans - so a thank you Trish for taking the reins. Also, with the passing of Alan, David Canfer has accepted the post of Club Captain whom I am sure will get the support of all members – Congratulations David!
As always this time of year there is a great deal of preparation to cope with before opening day and that means the need for a “Work Party”. It’s normally a worrying moment not knowing how many will turn up, and this year was no exception with a few extra jobs to carry out. But the worrying was all in vain, by 10.30 we had 18 willing hands(a record), sufficient to get the place into a respectable shape and ready for Sunday 22nd start – well done to that very efficient work party!
Finally, we
have recently lost another long standing member, this time on a happier note. As most of you know, Alf Arnold is about to move into Chelsea Hospital as a Chelsea Pensioner. Alf, together with his wife Vera, became members in 1987 and
after Vera died in 2010 Alf continued bowling for Thornham until last year, travelling all the way from Kesgrave, Tuesday afternoons and Wednesday evenings. Well into his 80’s, that’s what I call dedication – good luck Alfie!

NEWS & RESULTS – 2012 – Week 1 (22/4 to 29/4)

What a great start to the season, with threatening clouds all around and a forecast of nasty stuff to come, the members still rallied round and turned up to what turned out to be a successful afternoon. Yes, I am referring to our opening day on Sunday 22nd April when we bowled for the traditional first trophy of the season – the Richard St Pier Shield.

A few days early, but we managed to celebrate this romantic occasion on Saturday 11th under the title of “Games & Food for Lovers”. What that exactly meant I don’t really know, but I imagined starting the evening with “Postman’s Knock” then sitting down to a plate of “Cannabis & Chips” finishing with “Viagra & Custard” for dessert.
When I arrived and walked into the Clubhouse I was really impressed. It was just like going into a top class restaurant, with the lights down low, posh candles scattered around, the tables all laid out fancy-like and a little soft music in the background – a very pleasant start to a lovely evening! What I couldn’t understand about the “Lovers” bit was that everyone brought their spouses?
Thankfully, I also got the menu wrong. Madeleine, in her usual magical way, cooked up a delicious meal with Beast of Chicken or Salmon accompanied by an assortment of veg, followed by a selection of desserts provided by a few of our lovely ladies.
Not the best of our turnouts, with a few “bugs” keeping several away, but the atmosphere was very pleasant resulting in a nice relaxing evening – for those of us that didn’t have to cook, etc, anyway! Oh yes, we didn’t have time for “Postman’s Knock”!
Our next function will be “Bingo & Fish & Chips” on Saturday 3rd March 7pm, so please let Mads or Barbara know if you are coming.
On Friday 17th March a committee meeting was held and together with the discussions on current matters such as Drive Way, Irrigation, Fund Raising, etc, dates were fixed for our annual events;-
Work Party. 14th April.
Opening Day (Richard St Pier Day). 15th April.
Pairs/Triples. 10th June.
Pairs/Triples. 1st July.
Helen Crick Day. 11th August (Saturday).
E.G.M. 5th October.
Work Party. 6th & 7th October
Christmas Party. 8th December.
Presentation Dinner. 19th January 2013.

Just one more thing, we have another “Octogenain” amongst us – Edna is 80 today.
Edna & Dick Canfer joined the club 27 years ago in 1985 and have remained two of our most dedicated and loved members throughout their membership. Sadly, they no longer play, but their support at matches is second to none – we love you both and a HAPPY BIRTHDAY EDNA.
