Thornham Magna Community Open Spaces (tmcos) is a community group set up in 2009 to focus on community-based outdoor projects.  An independent body, with eligibility to apply for outside funding from various sources, the group welcomes feedback on suggested projects that would make a positive difference to Thornham Magna’s open spaces.

tmcos awarded sustainability grant

Background:  a Sustainability Grant is awarded by Groundwork UK, and funded by the Big Lottery, to ensure that a project will continue to be a valuable asset for a community.

The Sustainability Grant is intended to help provide a group with the skills and equipment they need to maintain their project; and build and maintain community interest and participation in the use and  appreciation of the site / project.

Examples of what the sustainability grant will fund are as follows:

  • Small items of equipment and tools, such as litter pickers, brooms, brush cutters or spades, where necessary to maintain the site
  • Items of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, hard hats and safety glasses
  • Training for community members to use equipment or to perform other tasks identified as necessary in the maintenance plan
  • Costs associated with running events or activities designed to stimulate community interest (in the first twelve months following practical completion). This could include insurance to cover a specific activity, hire of specialists, casual staff, volunteer recruitment, materials, educational packs, photocopying or leaflets.
  • Specialist  skills & taster sessions
  • Costs associated with using the project to promote aspects of environmental sustainability, such as encouraging recycling, composting, walking and cycling, food production or environmental education.

An award of £3,500 has been made to tmcos.  This grant is specifically to fund the sustainability of the Thornham Walks Community Play Area.

The monies will be used to purchase machinery and tools that will be used by volunteers to maintain the area and for events to raise awareness of the project.  Additionally, interested volunteers have been given the opportunity to train in playground safety checks.

Plant Your Playground Event

On Thursday 27th October, between 10am and 12:30pm, children and their parents and carers joined in a planting event to add natural play features to the bespoke Thornham Walks Play Area, newly opened in August of this year.

Youngsters initially gathered at Thornham Walks office to share home-made cakes, (some made by the children themselves), and coffee/tea whilst Helen Sibley, countryside manager, gave instructions on how, what and where to plant.

Together, we planted a 20m long hazel tunnel, that curled around the existing trees in an ‘S’ shape.  We also planted a grass labyrinth, made of the native pendulous sedge grass.  Both of these features will take a couple of years to reach maturity.

Parent of two Wendy Aiken said ‘My 3 year old daughter Willow has already made a mental note of which hazel nut tree she planted so she can watch this grow’. ‘As regular visitors here it is good to see our children having the opportunity to be a part of the ongoing development of this unique place.  Not only did they learn planting skills, but from helping plant the playground they develop a sense of ownership and pride.’

Native daffodils, snowdrops and snakeshead fritillary were also planted around the perimeter fencing with a view to giving some spring colour next year.

In keeping with community events, visitors either picknicked at the playground or ate at on-site café Street Forge who prepared home-made soup especially for the occasion.
