Thornhams Village Hall

The site for a village hall was sold on 13th August 1924 by Charles Henry Chandos Sixth Baron Henniker to the first set of trustees ‘for the purpose of a village hall for the benefit of the inhabitants of Thornham Magna and Parva’.

A new roof for the Village Hall

As you probably know the Village Hall roof is being replaced.  The existing roof has been letting in rain and requiring patching for some time but during last winter it deteriorated dramatically, developing holes you could put your fist in.  It was so bad there was no question of patching again and a complete reroof was the only option.  We have chosen L.Pizzey, a local roofing contractor, to do the work.  The scaffolding is being erected and given reasonable weather we will have a new roof in about three weeks.  Though there might be less parking space, the letting of the Hall should not be affected except for the short period the interior is being redecorated.

Cheese & Wine 2010

The May Bank holiday weekend was well underway at the Thornhams Village Hall, Friday evening, 30th April. Villagers from the Thornhams, their friends and family joined each other for an evening of fellowship, friendship and fundraising.

Guests were offered a free glass of excellent wine, served by trustee Laurie Calkin, with the opportunity to purchase further glasses. The fine selection and variety of cheese was accompanied by witty explanations of their name and provenance and accompanied  with fresh French bread and a selection of crackers. The table display, organised by trustee Priscilla Macrae, was first-rate.

whiskybowling.jpgFollowing this,a game of ‘whisky bowling’ to entertain the guests and kick off the fundraising was begun. Lead by chairman Mark Tibbenham and trustee Ian Macrae, the two demonstrated to everyone how to roll a £1 coin towards the whisky bottle. Many attempts were made … but in the end Steve walked away with the coveted bottle of whisky.

And in this genial atmosphere ensued the draw for the raffle. Assisted by trustee Rosemary Tyler, each winner drew out the following ticket. Winners had a range of prizes to pick from, including a sumptuous basket of fresh fruit, chocolates, wine, pots of lilies, packets of seeds, as well as other sundries.

In all £75 was raised to help with the upkeep and maintenance of the village hall.  Thank you to everyone for their donations, hard work, and for supporting this event.
