Thornhams Village Hall

A new roof for the Village Hall

As you probably know the Village Hall roof is being replaced.  The existing roof has been letting in rain and requiring patching for some time but during last winter it deteriorated dramatically, developing holes you could put your fist in.  It was so bad there was no question of patching again and a complete reroof was the only option.  We have chosen L.Pizzey, a local roofing contractor, to do the work.  The scaffolding is being erected and given reasonable weather we will have a new roof in about three weeks.  Though there might be less parking space, the letting of the Hall should not be affected except for the short period the interior is being redecorated.

Obviously the cost of a complete reroof is substantial and ,although we do have some funds, we do not have enough to cover the whole cost.  We have been extremely fortunate to have secured two grants.  Mid Suffolk District Council have awarded us a grant which will pay half the cost.  This is extraordinarily generous (especially in the present financial climate) and we are extremely grateful to Tom Barker, Community Development Officer, for his assistance in this matter.  The second grant is from Charles Michell, County Councillor for the Hartismere area, and his help is greatly appreciated.  There are two other Council Officers who went out of their way to help us; Tony Fitch, Building Control Surveyor, who guided us through the Building Regulation Application and Peter Goodyear, Senior Planning Officer, who quickly dealt with any planning issues.  There is no doubt that Mid Suffolk District Council has done us proud and we will be sending a letter of appreciation.  Another special mention is deserved by Hindley & Associates, Structural Engineers of Norwich, who gave free advice which probably saved us hundreds of pounds.  Last, but by no means least, the Parish Meeting, which could have been in direct competition with us for the same grant, generously shelved their application on the basis that reroofing the Hall should heve priority over their plans for the playground.

Thus there are a lot of people who enabled us to repair our Village Hall so that we can continue to use and enjoy it.  We ask you to keep on supporting our events and to continue making bookings sine we need to restore our funds!
