Telephone Scam

Suffolk Police is warning members of the public to remain vigilant after a number of people have been in contact in relation to a telephone scam.

Police have been contacted by residents who have received a cold call from someone offering a personal loan. Often they will claim to be from the Ministry of Finance, Money Saving Expert or a loan company but in all instances they are not genuine.

The caller will ask for the victim to send them a fee in the form of a Ukash voucher code by email or over the telephone. The company will then contact the victim on further occasions asking for more fees but inevitably the loan never arrives.

Grey Van

We've had reports of a grey van cruising slowly around the area and looking suspicious - followed by thefts from outbuildings in Stoke Ash. Keep your eyes peeled and if you see anything suspicious, try and get a number plate and pass it on to the police  (01473 613500).

We all know the pattern: the thieves tend to target an area, target vulnerable looking properties and then move on to another area having performed several thefts. Don't let it happen here - stay vigilant and report suspicious activity.

Bogus Burglar Alarm Sales

Following a number of complaints, Suffolk Trading Standards are warning residents to be vigilant when opening their doors to companies offering burglar alarms for as little as a pound.

A salesperson may cold call by telephone and insist on visiting the same day to discuss the installation of a free or cheap alarm. Companies may also use high-pressure tactics to scaremonger residents.

Based on previous complaints, Trading Standards found that the companies failed to mention hidden fees for the monitoring, upkeep and rapid response facilities. Some residents have found themselves tied into a long contract agreement costing thousands of pounds.

James Garrett, Suffolk Fair Trading Officer said; "We are urging residents, especially elderly or vulnerable people, to be aware of such calls. Our advice is not to buy anything based on a cold call. If you intend to make a major purchase always research the market and get at least three quotes from reputable companies."

If residents do not wish to receive unsolicited sales and marketing telephone calls, they can register for free via the Telephone Preference Service on 0845 070 0707 or www.tpsonline.org.uk.
