Referendum Results
Written by Mark Hatton

From a total of 75 households, 23 households took the time to respond so many thanks to them. That's close to 31% which is better than most elections Smile

Some statistics from the results follow:

  1. 4 households didn't know about the role of the meeting or when it met
  2. All 23  households read the minutes
  3. 20 responded to decline to stand for office,1 may stand, 2 would stand for an interim period
  4. Future of the meeting:
5 didn't know enough to respond
3 thought it a bad idea to disband
8 were worried our views would not be heard on local issues with Mid Suffolk District Council and Suffolk County Council - particularly with regard to planning
2 felt the meeting should continue as it is now
3 would like to work with the Village Hall Committee (a completely separate entity) for a more "joined up village"
  5. Social Group:
19 would like to to see an active group meeting for social gatherings
3 would not support a group
    1 declined to comment
A comment was made as to who would be responsible for such a group?

If you'd like to hear more about these results and join in a discussion about them then PLEASE do attend the extraordinary meeting to be held at the village hall on Wednesday 14th November. If you can't attend, login to the site and voice your opinions here right now! In the meantime, here's a selection of the main comments:

  • Are we properly consulted now?
  • There is an argument about losing something which helps to bind the community together - disbanding the village meeting would not affect me very much, nor the village.
  • We would lose out on any issue that needed a village voice to be put forward
  • Time is always an issue and I couldn't do a proper job on the committee, there are no doubt others in the same situation and it would be easy to mistake their inability to attend meetings for apathy or disinterest.
  • Feel the village is pretty well covered by MSDC so do not feel we would be adversely affected by no Parish Meeting.
  • The precept is surely worth keeping.
  • Thornham Magna is a village with little community spirit - part of this is due to the fact that we have no shop, no school or centre in which people encounter one another.
  • Could the website be developed to support the meeting?
  • It would be good for the Parish Meeting to continue, however if individuals are unwilling to come forward then it can only falter
  • In some way it helps to bring the village together.
  • I feel that the village needs proper representation to the council in all matters, especially keeping local people aware of local council decisions, which could be implemented without us knowing of.
  • Not quite sure of the consequences, if meeting didn't exist.
  • We do not have the option of the winding up of the Parish Meeting, its functions are summarised in quasi-lgeal literature: I see no reason why it should not also take on whatever a social group might do. Devolution to individuals or sub committees could lighten the load on the officers.
  • Just moving in so cannot answer, but it doesn't sound like a good idea
So, there you have it - don't forget, you can make your opinions known on the forum and make this an interactive discussion there. If this isn't an ideal subject for heated online debate on our website, what is!

Written by Mark Hatton
wii.jpg

Two years ago it was a Revolution. Nearly 18 months ago it became the target of schoolboy sniggering and consumer ridicule as it became the Wii. Can video games be art?
Written by Mark Hatton

ico.jpg Every now and then I watch a film that genuinely engages my emotions and I've realised that when I do, I tend to find myself "watching" the credits; not to find out who the 3rd grip was but as a gentle reintroduction to reality, a quiet moment to ponder the significance of the experience. Up until now it has never occurred to me that this might happen with a game. Ico just changed that and I'm filled with an overwhelmingly positive glow as a result.
