The executive committee of MSDC are meeting on Monday 11thJanuary 2010 to discuss their 2010/11 budget proposals.  One of the items is:

‘ The proposed closure of Thornham Walks from April 2010,which would generate a saving of £38,000 per annum. There is likely to be someredundancy costs associated with this proposal.‘

More details can be found at:

 http://apps.csduk.com/CMISWebPublic/Binary.ashx?Document=8142

I believe the closure of the Thornham Walks would have a negative and adverse effect on the village as a whole, and urge villagers to write directly to the committee voicing their concerns over the proposal.

Please could you e-mail your views on the above to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it for the attention of the Executive Committee. She will then pass your letters on to them.  One of the committee members is our local councillor Diana Kearsley, who can also be e-mailed with your feedback at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it

Currently the Thornham Walks attracts an estimated 25,000 people per annum.

The possible outcomes on the village if the Thornham Walks were shut down are:

 ·        The Loss of 12 miles of access to countryside flora and fauna

·        Loss of 12 miles of running terrain

·        Loss of 12 miles of dog walking territory

·        Potential closure of some of our local business that are directly linked to visitors  – ie The Four Horse Shoes, the Forge Tea Rooms (and the gift shop next door); the Coach House, the Auberge, Thornham Hall, Thornham Walled Garden

·        It may even affect you as house prices could drop as access to the countryside on our doorstep is a factor to people buying houses in Thornham

Please could you write to the Executive Committee as a matter of urgency.

If we could encourage the Council to put the decision on hold for just one year, this would at the very least give time to consider alternative funding and self-sustaining options to the directly affected stakeholders, the Countryside Officers and Thornham Estate trustees.

We've already emailed the council about this and would urge as many other people as possible to try and put some pressure on them.

It really is important that we all write ASAP on this otherwise this will be another "painless cut" for the council. The Field Centre closure last year went largely unopposed and has set the template. Make your voice heard - you don't need to write an essay; a couple of lines will do and it only takes a few minutes.

Sadly this is just another case of "accountant with spreadsheet" not seeing the bigger picture and whittling away all the resources. If you don't shout now, the walks will be gone, people will be unemployed and local businesses will be struggling even more.

Likewise have written to Exec Committee and Councillor Kearsley. Any chance of getting this into local newspapers to elicit support from the many people in East Anglia that have enjoyed the Walks for some considerable time now?

I wrote to the executive committee objecting to the proposed closure of the walks, and received the following email from a councillor who sits on the executive committee:

Thornham Walks Closure Green Party Position 10.1.10

Thank you for your recent communication to Mid Suffolk District council regarding the potential closure of Thornham walks.
My name is Andrew Stringer I am a Green Party District councillor for Mendlesham Ward which includes Wickham Skeith and the leader of the Suffolk together Green & Independent group of councillors at Mid Suffolk. This position means that I have a seat on the Executive Committee and will be attending tomorrow what ever the weather!
Thornham Walks is in our view the environmental jewel in the crown of Mid Suffolk, an area that is regularly recognised as one of the best places to live in the U.K.
We realise that budgets are tight and savings have to be made but we believe savings could be found in other back office areas and projects that are regularly over budget ( Wingfield Barn Arts £55,000.00 over budget as I write)
Tomorrow I intend to vigorously oppose this short sighted Quick fix.
We also believe that projects like Thornham walks have a big role to play in our future tourism industry and help to keep our economy and sustainable tourism businesses afloat.

Please forgive me for using the email address on your letter but I felt I should communicate that this folly will not go unchallenged.

Yours Faithfully Andrew Stringer Green Party District & County Councillor

I was pleased to receive a similar letter from Andrew and hope that he succeeds in influencing the outcome of the meeting. Sadly I did not receive any reply at all from Councillor Kearsley!

Good to see Andrew will be there to bring some common sense and rational thinking to the debate! A very positive "can-do" letter I thought and the sort of attitude that can only help him win more votes next time there's an election.

Three cheers for Andrew.

On a less enthusiastic note, I was disappointed to see there was nothing on the noticeboard at the walks over the weekend!! What a missed opportunity I took it upon myself to speak to everyone I saw about the closure and none of the visitors knew anything of the closure...

Yes we thought this was strange also. Maybe someone could mention this to Lady Henniker at the village meeting tomorrow (sorry we will not be able to make it). This will surely be the most effective way of raising public support and awareness. Apparently Diana Kearsley will also be at the meeting tomorrow. Ben and Clare

Please see below the outcome of the meeting held today as reported by Andrew. At least a stay of execution for a couple of months!

Thornham Walks Threatened Closure

Dear all sorry to send out a blanket e mail but here goes.
Today s meeting did approve the looking into closing the walks but we did get a significant amendment in the form of 6.1(d) That our Scrutiny Committee among others look at other sources of funding available to plug the shortfall and also to look at other savings that this service area could make. This basically gives us 2 months to look into it. A short period of time but at least it gives us a little time to rescue this dire situation hope this helps Andrew Stringer

so... what can we do now to stop the closure?
