Waste Incinerator: Update
Written by Mark Hatton

As you know, Suffolk County Council are considering Eye Airfield as a site on which to build, possibly several, waste incinerators. It turns out that we are in the 3rd and final round of "consultations" and most of us only heard about this a couple of weeks ago. The reason why? Suffolk County Council said that they 'did not wish to create paper waste by contacting residents'. That should give you a good idea as to how much you should trust them on this issue and how important it is that you write and object (details below - click Read More)

For comparison, Stanton were also threatened with an incinerator. They managed to raise 600 objections on the first round of consultations and the site is no longer being considered. Eye managed 8 objections :(

You need to write to (or email) Suffolk County Council BEFORE FEB 22nd in order to get your voice heard on this matter. You can write to:

Graham Gumby,
Minerals and Waste Policy Manager,
Suffolk County Council,
Endeavour House,
8 Russell Road,

UPDATE: Writing to SCC is not enough in itself since they have of course tried to obfuscate the process by insisting that either you complete a form (which is neither simple nor friendly) or essentially make objections to specific points wrt the "soundness" of the strategy document. Either way it amounts to the same thing and you may as well complete the form. I've made an attempt to help here by uploading my own semi-complete form. I've cobbled this together from a number of sources and my own interpretation of "PPS12". I'm not saying it's "correct" or indeed complete but it should at least be accepted where a straight "I object" letter will not. Feel free to download and amend as you see fit before sending as detailed above .

Let's be clear here, this isn't a case of "Not in my back yard", there are potentially very serious health problems associated with waste incineration (see some of the links below to get started) and you should object against the policy of incineration itself regardless of location. Siting this particular plant within sight of a school is absolute madness.

Briefly, here are some very good reasons to object:

1) Health: Despite the government's position that "there is no detectable health risk" there is considerable evidence to the contrary and the emissions from the 100m tall chimney will fall on an area of radius 10-15 miles around it. Some useful links:

http://www.suffolkcaws.org.uk/tiki-index.php?page=Incinerators+and+pollution

2) Traffic: Waste will be brought to Eye from all over, with the expectation that there will be 1 lorry movement every minute. This will put a considerable load on our roads and create a huge amount of noise. Lorries removing ash from site will also leave a trail of dioxin and heavy metal laden ash along their routes. This ash is highly toxic to all life.

3) The environment: Eye and the surrounding area are an area of natural beauty. The siting of an incinerator here would change this irrevocably due to the physical size and height of such an installation (it would be visible for many miles).

4) Expansion: Once the site has had its designation changed to "Waste Site", it WILL expand and further unwanted developments will happen without hope of opposition.

5) Your Pocket: The value of local properties will fall significantly so even if none of the above bothers you, you WILL lose out financially in the long term - unlike the developers who have a great deal to gain. How many developers of these plants do you think live remotely close to their sites?

If you value your health, the environment or just your own bank account, please write / email now and make some noise about this issue.

I emailed SCC as suggested and was politely told I needed to complete a form - a form designed to make you think "I can't be bothered" / "I don't understand". In other words, you can't just write to them objecting.

I've uploaded my own completed form (sans personal details) in the hope that it might give others a starting point. I'm not saying it is an ideal response, but it should at least be accepted. If you've got a better response or feel mine is inadequate etc then please add to the comments below and let's work together to produce a more finely honed version...

thx for the help with the file. it's still a difficult job (and at short notice comparatively) to rebuff their claims on a legal or unsound basis. can't believe we are so far along and in danger of being rollercoastered on this
