NEWS & RESULTS – 2019 – Week 14 (22/7/19 to 28/7/19)
Another busy week and only 2 wins from 5 matches.
It was a tough game for the Monday 2Wood team playing Haughley at Home and sadly finished with no points. Mo, Andie & Colin led for most of a very tight game and looked set to win when they were 15-12 up at the 17th. They then lost the remaining 4 ends to lose by 1 shot. Another close game was that of Brenda, Phil & Laurie and they were 15-13 up after 15 ends, but they also fell over the final stretch, picking up only 1 shot to their opponents 7. Mads, David &Mel led all the way to the 11th – then it all went “pear shaped”!! They did save face a little by picking up a 5 on the final end. Geoff, Mike & Kipp lost their game over the first 5 ends. They competed well for the rest of the game but couldn’t make up for lost ground!
Considering the fact that the Afternoon A. team have been struggling, they had a great win at Woodfield, in fact – the most exciting!! It was an exceptionally hot day, the B team had called off and the A. team agreed to play 14 ends only. After losing 5 shots on the first 2 ends, Alan, Geoff & Jan soon got into their stride and took 9 of the remaining 12 ends to win by 8 shots. By the 8th end, the match was out of sight as Bob, Moira & Colin were 2-18 down. They then started to recover and by the 11th there were only 3 shots in the match, but at the 12th, both rinks dropped shots – 7 between them! Now 10 adrift with 2 ends to go – match now out of sight again?? However, Jan’s rink managed a1 and a 5, with Colin’s rink getting a 3 at the 13th and still playing – holding 1 shot, close to the cot for a draw – nail biting!! Colin then bowls his final wood, I am on the side line in a state of sheer excitement cheering it on as it trundles down the green and what an absolute cracker – nestling nicely against the cot! 2 shots and the match by 1 shot – well done team!!!
The Upper Waveney Team had a good win at home against Wortham on the Tuesday evening. Mel H, Phil & David was the only rink to lose and that was mainly down to being stuck on 6 for 7 ends. Mo, Mads & Laurie had a bad start and it took 13 ends before they took the lead – and then there was no stopping them! Ann, Colin & Mel N. led all the way and picked up a useful 5 on route. According to the score card, they got a 3 on the final end and the score should have been 22-10 – never mind, that’s history!! Joy Geoff & Kipp had the best win and went from 9-12 down at the 12th, to win 24-12, 6 ends later.
Just 2 points for the Wednesday Triples team this week and that was only losing by 6 shots at Bildeston. The one rink that failed to “measure-up” was Bob, Moira & Colin. They have suddenly lost their sparkle and won only 4 ends in a 17 shots defeat. The other rink to lose was David R, Glyn & Andie and led comfortably for most of the game up to 2 ends to go and then dropped a 5 and a 1 – sad!!! Brenda, Jan & Phil led from start to finish and shared the ends, but their winning ends were a tad bigger. Captain David, Mo & Kipp had a more “up & down” game and also shared the ends, but a few more 2’s and a 4 helped them to win their game!!
Friday evening and it’s the 2Wood team again, all limbered up for a re-arranged game at home with Combs Ford. Well, Ivan, Mads & Colin were limbered up and eased their way through to a 5 shots victory. With 2 wins for Kipp this week, the strain was a little too much and together with Mike & Geoff, found themselves in all sorts of trouble and lost by 26 shots – even though they won 8 ends!!! I don’t know if this is correct, but David M, Mo & Andie played against 2 Bullock – well, I ask you?? They were doing ok until half way when the Bullocks had a good old time piling in some scores that couldn’t be recovered. Brenda, Phil & Laurie had a bad start and were 0-5 down after 3 ends and then settled down to a very even game, but just couldn’t recover those early 5 lost shots. They even went into the lead at the 13th, but this was followed by a series of 2’s against to their 1’s – unlucky, but good game!
Not quite finished yet as Sunday was the Club’s George Clarke Day. Sadly, our attendance is falling for these events and of course – the weather was threatening? There was also plenty of rain that fell the day before making area’s very squelchy. However, our groundsman Laurie in his wisdom did a thorough check, sorted out some playable rinks and to be quite honest – we had a wonderful day!!! And what a wonderful dinner we had too? I should have taken a photo of the spread, but I was too busy gorging myself to think about it. Just imagine, tables all in a line covering half the veranda, a mixture of all sorts of salad, succulent freshly cooked chicken, freshly boiled potatoes cooked to perfection and a host of other bits and pieces. Oh yes, and plenty of delicious deserts – who needs a photograph??
Then back to the bowling – for those who got through the first round of course!
